APOLLO THEATER FOUNDATION, INC. EDUCATION INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITY
October 2013 – May 2014 Apollo Theater Oral History Internship/Theater Arts
The Apollo Theater Education Program develops school partnerships focused on integrating the arts and humanities with the schools’ existing curricula. A primary objective of the Education Program is to develop and increase students’ knowledge of the correlations between Harlem’s history, Black culture, and the Apollo Theater.
Operating under the Education Program, the Apollo Theater Oral History Project at C.S. 154 the Harriet Tubman Learning Center is designed to encourage and develop students’ creative skills in the arts and communication, with a strong emphasis on community and intergeneration relationships, artistic expression and local history. The project includes two 18 - 21 week residencies with 4th and 5th grade classes and provides students with an opportunity to learn about the history and events of the 20th century from individuals who experienced it firsthand.
After learning the techniques of oral history interviewing and the process of collecting and organizing information, students conduct their own interviews with elders from the Harlem community. Information collected from the interviews is then used to create interdisciplinary project using writing, theater, music, and visual arts.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Working alongside the Apollo’s Education Program staff, arts-in-education professionals, and teachers and student at C.S. 154, the intern’s main responsibilities will include but not be limited to:
Assisting in the ongoing development, implementation and expansion of the Oral History Project including planning, assessment and documentation; Overseeing transcription and organization of recorded interviews. Assisting with organizing meetings, special events and workshops;
Supporting teaching artists with classroom and project management; Note taking at meetings and professional development workshops; Liaise between the Manager of School Programs and school based team (including Teaching artists); Providing support in expanding the Oral History Project to include new schools.

This internship will provide an opportunity to learn about oral history pedagogy, interviewing, research and archiving, use of digital recording technology, interdisciplinary approaches to learning, and arts and humanities education. Internship applicants must commit at least two days per week (average 12 hours) to the project, preferably Mondays and Thursdays, beginning October 2013 through May 2014.
In addition to providing practical experience, a small stipend is offered with the internship.
QUALIFICATIONS
The ideal candidate is considering a career in the arts or humanities, and is seeking an opportunity to work on educational program planning, implementation and assessment. Applicants with coursework in history, education, and/or the arts, will be decidedly granted an interview for this position.
Additionally, Working towards an Graduate or higher post-secondary degree at an accredited college / university; Must have familiarity with collecting and documenting oral histories. Experience working with digital audio, video and/or still camera highly desirable. Must be able to transcribe and digitize collected oral histories. Have experience working in a primary or secondary school setting. A keen interest in interdisciplinary education involving the arts and ELA and/or social studies. Have the ability to focus, organize and work independently in a fast-paced environment.
C.S. 154, The Harriet Tubman Learning Center is part of the New York City Department of Education. The school is located on West 127th St. in Harlem.
Since introducing the first Amateur Night contests in 1934, the Apollo Theater has played a major role in the emergence of innovative musical genres including jazz, swing, bebop, R&B, gospel, blues, soul and hip-hop. Based on its cultural significance and architecture, the Apollo Theater received state and city landmark designation in 1983 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The Apollo Theater Education Program develops school partnerships focused on integrating the arts and humanities with the schools’ existing curricula. A primary objective of the Education Program is to develop and increase students’ knowledge of the correlations between Harlem’s history, Black culture, and the Apollo Theater.
The Apollo Theater Video Oral History Project at Wadleigh Secondary School of Performing and Visual Arts provides students with opportunities to learn to document oral histories using technology for documentation as well as creative purposes.
Through a video production residency conducted in conjunction with the African-American and English studies classes, which are co-taught by a classroom teacher and an Apollo teaching artist, students learn aspects of producing a video. Students also have opportunities to make real-world application of their foundational filmmaking tools by recording personal accounts of historical or current events from those who have firsthand experience with the topic or subject of study. As a result the students utilize a lens through which they see their community in relation to the past and are able to identify their role within their community.
This internship will provide an opportunity to learn about oral history pedagogy, interviewing, research and archiving, use of digital recording technology, interdisciplinary approaches to learning, and arts and humanities education. Support classroom and project management; Assist teaching artist and students in planning, filming and editing documentaries that incorporate oral history interviewees; Guide students in understanding appropriate academic and professional use of media, i.e.: utilize and convey best practices for fair use in documentary filmmaking and media literacy education throughout the project; Under advisement of teaching artist, co-facilitate pre and post-production, organizing and managing project media, records, document exchanges between the office and classroom. Liaise between the Manager of School Programs and school based team (including the teaching artist).

Additionally, Working towards an Undergraduate (Junior or Senior), Graduate or higher post- secondary degree at an accredited college / university; Experience working with digital audio, video and/or still camera is a must; Strong familiarity with consumer non-linear editing software including, but not limited to, use of Final Cut Pro, Adobe Premier Pro, and audio editing software such as Audacity and GarageBand; Candidate must be familiar with different media file formats and able to digitize, convert and compress collected video oral histories for programmatic use i.e.: preparing online video content; Understand and utilize organized methods for researching, conducting interviews, and employ appropriate professional practice in documentary filmmaking and media literacy education; Have experience working in a primary or secondary school setting. A keen interest in interdisciplinary education involving the arts and ELA and/or social studies. Have the ability to focus, organize and work independently in a fast-paced environment.
