Model NYC Council Project
Due: September 25, 2013
FREE!
Each year since 2002, 51
high school students with College Now experience are given the unique
opportunity to assume the role of a New York City Council Member and represent
one of the legislative districts in the five boroughs. This project allows
students to experience city government and public service administration from
the inside.
Model Council participants
work with the faculty mentors from the Edward T. Rogowsky Internship Program in
Government and Public Affairs to prepare for their role on the City Council.
Students will participate in an intensive training program that consists of
several Saturday sessions in November. Through direct participation in the process
of legislative decision-making, they will play a central role in their own
pursuit of a public service education and learn about the realities associated
with policy making, as well as the intricacies of representation in a diverse
urban setting while working on a real legislative agenda.
At the conclusion of the
fall workshop series, participants get the chance to put their knowledge and
experience to use as the Model City Council members debate and vote on a piece
of real life legislation. Afterwards, students celebrate their accomplishments
and meet elected City Council members at a reception hosted by the City
University of New York.
