INNOVATIVE YOUTH ORGANIZATION IN EAST HARLEM SEEKS AMERICORPS REAL KIDS COACHING FELLOWS FOR REAL KIDS PROGRAM
Harlem RBI, an award winning youth development program, is seeking dynamic, motivated individuals to serve as Coaching Fellows in a comprehensive after-school program for grades K-5 in East Harlem, New York. Harlem RBI’s REAL Kids (Reading and Enrichment Academy for Learning) program provides youth with afternoons of educational and recreational activities designed to foster a positive learning environment, build character and improve reading levels.
Like all Harlem RBI staff, Coaching Fellows should demonstrate a strong commitment to the mission and values of Harlem RBI and should have substantial expertise in all areas of responsibility. AmeriCorps is a network of local, state, and national service programs that connect over 70,000 Americans each year in intensive service to meet community needs. At Harlem RBI, AmeriCorps members model the importance of service as coaching fellows, improving the education and healthy futures of our youth. AmeriCorps also develops members as leaders through professional training and continuing education support. Roles and Responsibilities
Collaborating with a co-coach and teacher to design, document and lead lessons to help youth build character and personal development;
Serving as an assistant teacher, helping to design daily reading activities in innovative literacy activities Coaching and organizing baseball and softball teams for youth; Leading recreational activities and chaperoning field trips; Modeling and encouraging positive participation in all daily activities;
Supervising and managing youth behavior at all times using a positive outlook; Participating in weekly professional development and tactical meetings; Participating in service projects on 3 Saturdays or holidays during the term of service.
All AmeriCorps members will begin training on September 18th that will run through September 27th. Direct service with youth will begin September 30th and run through June 6th (program dates subject to change). Coaching Fellows average 25 direct service hours per week Monday – Friday between the hours of 1:30-6:30pm depending on site placement and including additional weekly team meetings. All AmeriCorps members must additionally attend monthly 2-hour meetings from 11AM- 1PM on the first Wednesday of the month.
Qualifications
Experience working with children; Passion to work in a team environment and meet high expectations for youth and staff; Ability to take initiative and maintain flexibility; Two of more years of post-secondary education is preferred; NOTE: Knowledge of baseball/softball is helpful but not required.
Compensation
AmeriCorps service members will earn the standard living allowance of $487.50 gross per payroll, totaling $8,775.00 total pay for the duration of your service contract. Upon completion of 675 service hours you will also receive an education award of $2,114.

WHO WE ARE
Harlem RBI serves over 1,000 East Harlem youth by providing free, high-quality summer and after-school programs to youth ages 5-21 years in an intensive multi-year commitment that connects youth and families to age-appropriate programs and passionate professional staff over time.
All Harlem RBI youth play on a baseball or softball team and participate in a full range of education and youth development programs designed to build the skills and confidence necessary to succeed as healthy and active adults.
Harlem RBI's programs have been recognized nationally and locally by leading youth development practitioners and researchers.
In September 2008, Harlem RBI opened the DREAM Charter School. DREAM’s mission is to educate East Harlem children through a comprehensive K-8 program that builds a community of passionate lifelong learners. The DREAM Charter School currently serves 250 kindergarten, first, second, third and fourth-grade students and will grow one grade (50 students) each year until it reaches capacity with grades K-8 and a total of 450 students.
WHAT WE DO
Using a unique blend of youth development principles and sports, Harlem RBI provides inner-city youth with opportunities to Play, Learn and Grow as student athletes. Staff uses the power of teams to Coach, Teach and Inspire youth to recognize their potential and realize their dreams.
Our programs are designed to ensure that all youth graduate high school and matriculate to college. Harlem RBI graduates are:
Physically and mentally healthy, able to avoid risky behaviors High school graduates College graduates Work-ready, with the basic knowledge and skills to find and maintain a job Good teammates, friends and family members, cultivating positive relationships with peers and adults; Confident, competent and caring members of their communities
Active citizens, who participate in their community’s social and political life.
