Plants and Society at the Environmental Study Center (ESC) - A 4-Credit College Course

Open to students entering Grades 10, 11, and 12
Monday, July 18 to Thursday, August 11, 2016
Class begins at 9:00 AM and ends at 12:00 PM Mondays through Wednesdays at ESC
Class begins at 9:00 AM and ends at 4:30 PM Thursdays at SUNY Old Westbury
The New York City Department of Education's ESC in partnership with SUNY Old Westbury are offering high school students who have successfully completed Living Environment an opportunity to experience a college-level course while earning 4 SUNY college credits. A lecture/laboratory course in plants and society for non-science majors entering tenth, eleventh, or twelfth grade in Fall 2016. This class will introduce students to the diversity of form and function in plants. It will emphasize sustainability and plants' importance in society. Group and individual projects will include the use of light and dissecting microscopes, study of photosynthesis and cellular respiration, cultivation of common vegetables, and exploration of vegetation.

The New York City Department of Education's Environmental Study Center (ESC) in partnership with SUNY Old Westbury are offering students an opportunity to experience a college-level course while earning 4 SUNY college credits.  

Plants and Society: An Introduction to Plants and Their Importance in Society is a lecture/laboratory course in plants and society for high school students entering grades 10, 11, and 12 in Fall 2016. This course will introduce students to the diversity of form and function in plants. It will emphasize sustainability and plants' importance in society. Group and individual projects will include the use of light and dissecting microscopes, study of photosynthesis and cellular respiration, cultivation of common vegetables, and exploration of vegetation. Students who have successfully completed Living Environment are eligible to apply. 
Students who successfully pass this course will earn 4 SUNY College credits.

Dates: July 18 - August 11, 2016
Times:
  • Monday-Wednesday 9:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. at ESC
  • Thursday 9:00 a.m.-4:30 p.m. at SUNY Old Westbury
  • transportation provided)

Transportation: Roundtrip transportation to ESC from Atlantic Avenue-Barclays Center and from ESC to SUNY Old Westbury will be provided. MetroCards will also be provided.

Registration Fee: $20 check or money order made out to "NYC DOE in Trust for ESC" due upon acceptance by Monday, May 23, 2016. The registration fee is non-refundable.




How to Apply (please note that there are two parts to the application process):
Part 1: Click the Apply Now button below to complete Part 1 of the application online.
Part 2: Download and print the paper consent form application packet from the last page of this online application to complete Part 2 of the application.
a. First, complete the Parent/Guardian Consent and NYCDOE Media Release forms in the packet.
b. Next, give your teacher the Teacher Letter of Support form with an addressed, stamped envelope.  Teachers will mail the Teacher Letter of Support directly to ESC.
c. Finally, submit the entire paper consent form application packet by 5:00 PM on Thursday, April 21, 2016 by email to ESC@schools.nyc.gov or mail to:

* Applications that do not include both Part 1 and Part 2 will not be considered.  Only applications submitted on time and complete will be reviewed and judged by a panel of educators.

                                                                               
The online student application is due by 5:00 PM, Tuesday, April 19, 2016.  The entire paper consent form application packet is due by 5:00 PM, Thursday, April 21, 2016All completed applications will be reviewed and judged by a panel of educators.  Notification of acceptance will be sent during the week of May 16, 2016 via email from ESC@schools.nyc.gov.  Please check your spam/junk mail folders.  If the student is accepted, you will be required to pay a non-refundable $20 registration fee to cover the entire cost of the course, due by Tuesday, May 31, 2016.  Students who do not submit their registration fee will forfeit their seat.
