SPRING 2016 GOFUNDME The Brothers' Summer Opportunity

Hello, my name is Andy and my brother’s name is Carlos. When I was 10, Carlos and I finally met for the first time when Carlos moved to the United States to live with our father. At first, it was a hard transition, but we both decided to give a relationship a shot. We found a common interest in baseball. Since then, we have practiced and played together, which has made our relationship grow into a very strong friendship. We live in Washington Heights, a small neighborhood in uptown Manhattan, New York. We’ve seen many of our peers unable to make it out of this low income community. Our school, Washington Heights Expeditionary Learning School (WHEELS) focuses heavily on every student making it to and through college. In order to prepare for college my brother and I want to join a travel baseball team for the summer. This will help gain exposure with potential college scouts and give us a great addition to our resumes. It will also help us explore other parts of the country and provide an opportunity for us to move out of our current neighborhood. We will also get to play the game we love together which will give us a opportunity to bond!

Due to financial difficulties, our parents are unable to give us this money. The team we are playing for (Team Citius) has already done what they can to bring down the cost for us, but it will still cost us $1250 for both. The money is due to the team by May 31, 2016. We are asking our teachers, friends and family members for financial assistance for this incredible opportunity. All of the money will go directly to Team Citius, and this will cover our hotel costs, travel costs, food, and gear. If we are able to reach our goal, it would mean the world to us. We will have the opportunity to meet scouts that can help us achieve our dreams of going to college and getting out of Washington Heights. Together, we make an unstoppable team and we want to show others around the country what we are capable of while playing baseball. Any donation you are able to give will be incredibly helpful, and we truly appreciate it.

Andy and Carlos Rodriguez

Spring 2016 SELF ADVOCATE, Y'ALL! FREE PRE-COLLEGE COURSES WITH CollegeNow!

 Dear Student,

Have you received a score of 75+ on the ELA Regents exam? OR have you received an 80+ on the Algebra

Regents? Did you know that you that you need both scores to qualify for you to NOT take remedial

courses? If you have not achieved either of these scores, you should take advantage of the College Focus

Summer Program @ Borough Manhattan Community College.

The College Focus Program is an early intervention, pre-college activity, for Department Of Education students

whose Regents test scores qualify them to graduate high school but not to take college credits. The focus of

the program is to help NYC public high school students to not just meet CUNY standards for placement into

credit-bearing but also to acquire the range of skills necessary to succeed in college study.

In this free summer program, you will prepare to pass these tests. Passing these tests will exempt you from

SPRING 2016 SUPPORT Critical Theory and Social Justice Club will travel to Havana...

This spring break, 9 of our upper grade students from our Critical Theory and Social Justice Club will travel to Havana, Cuba (4/22-4/28) to continue their research about the island and about Afro-Cuban culture. Throughout our expedition, we will visit museums and cultural sites, meeting local historians, educators and youth to deepen our knowledge.

This is WHEELS' first international trip and we will be the first public high school - certainly the first majority free/reduced lunch school - to visit Cuba since the recent easing of travel restrictions for US citizens. To minimize barriers from family income as much as possible, we are subsidizing 80% of the roughly $1300 trip cost per student. So far, we have raised over $10,000, thanks to a generous donor, student/family contributions, a fundraiser open mic and our GoFundMe page. We are still $2,595 short and need the help of our friends, families and community to reach our goal before 4/21.

Please donate to our GoFundMe page, and share with your networks, to help make this trip to Cuba a reality for our studentshttps://www.gofundme.com/WHEELStoCuba. To learn more about our trip and see the students' perspectives about it, check out this video our group made (put together by Fritsch): WHEELS Trip To Cuba Introduction .

SPRING 2016 The Possibility Project Spring Musical no- and low-cost tickets available. SUPPORT WHEELS students who are IN THE SHOW!!!

This April, we will premiere a new original musical “Live. Record. Repeat?” featuring our After-School Cast.

About the Show: Lana Villanueva loves to study history but she hates going to history class. A senior and a daughter of immigrants, she wants to know the real story of the past not just the version that’s included in her history textbooks. Textbooks that don’t include the stories of people like her and her friends. What if she could record the stories of today and write the history that future generations studied? What if she told the true story As she examines the lives of her peers and finds them struggling with violence, broken families, love and loneliness, she discovers the question she is afraid to answer – is this how her generation is going to be remembered?

“LIVE. RECORD. REPEAT?” Performances:
Wednesday, April 20th @ 7:30pm
Thursday, April 21st @ 7:30pm
Friday, April 22nd @ 7:30pm
