What is Pratt Young Scholars?
Pratt Young Scholars is a need-based, three-year, scholarship program providing art and design college preparation to motivated Brooklyn high school students. Through innovative and challenging educational experiences in the Institute’s Youth Programs, this scholarship strives to provide students with the skills and knowledge necessary to pursue advanced studies in art and design.
Scholars will participate in three years of studio classes, workshops, field trips, and lectures exposing students to higher educational opportunities.
Eligibility
Students entering 10th grade in the 2014–2015 school year are eligible to apply if they:
- Attend a New York City public school.
- Demonstrate an interest in art and design.
- Maintain good academic standing.
- Qualify for financial need (as determined by NY State Free/Reduced Lunch).
How to Apply
Complete application form (download below) and submit the following requirements:
- Most recent report card
- One letter of recommendation from an art teacher, guidance counselor, or school administrator
- Personal statement (500 word maximum) responding to the following questions: What interests you about art and design? What do you hope to learn in the program?
Bring all materials to in-person registration on June 13, 2014, 3–6 PM, in South Hall, room 203, or mail to the address below. All materials must be received by June 13, 2014.
Interview
All eligible candidates will be contacted for an interview at which time:
- One parent/legal guardian is present
- Proof of household income in the form of an IRS tax return or equivalent is submitted
- Students must bring 5–10 samples of their artwork, which may include: sketches from a notebook, drawings, or other work demonstrating their interest in art and design
Calendar
School year: classes meet from October to May on Wednesdays from 5–7 PM and Saturdays from 10 AM–1 PM
