Expanded Horizons College Preparation Services

Expanded Horizons helps high school students negotiate the college admission process every step of the way.  The following services are offered at the Youth Services Division headquarters (301 Henry Street), as well as a network of high schools including the Urban Assembly Academy for Government and Low, the Lower Manhattan Arts Academy, Bard High School Early College, and the Henry Street School for International Studies.
SAT preparation courses are provided through partnerships with a variety of qualified third-party providers. Courses feature diagnostic exams, intensive instruction and test taking techniques.
Individual college counseling helps students structure their college search by selecting schools that match their interests and strengths, and feel supported throughout the application process. We also help students locate and apply for scholarships, navigate the financial aid process, and write their college essays.
College 101 is a college preparation course that provides an in-depth overview of the college and financial aid application processes for juniors.
Community Tutoring is available to all high school and college students in individual and small group settings to improve skills in specific subject areas.

Regents Prep is intensive tutoring to prepare young people for the January and June New York State Regents exams.

College trips offer an opportunity for students to visit college campuses and speak with admissions representatives, financial aid staff and current students.

Henry Street University, a summer college prep program for rising seniors, includes college field trips, help with applications and portfolio creation, scholarship essay writing classes and admissions workshops.
Achieve Tutoring Program, a comprehensive academic enrichment program for students who live in Manhattan's Lower East Side or attend high school there. The program aims to increase academic standing in a particular subject area or improve overall GPA. Participants are mandated to attend multiple education- and career-focused activities offered by Expanded Horizons, including SAT preparation courses, individual academic or college counseling, after-school tutoring (provided by NYU students), college trips, work readiness training, community service/service learning projects and recreational activities. C.A.U.S.E. Project

The C.A.U.S.E. Project (College Achievement through Urban Science Exploration) is a program for high school juniors to explore science as a career track in emerging areas such as green technologies, ecology and environmental studies. It aims to prepare students for the rigors of college and increase their chances for admission to top colleges and universities.  Students participate in field trips to learn about the urban environment of New York City, learn research methods, conduct and present a research project of their own, and attend a day Career Exploration series over several days at Cornell University.

Abrons/Aranow Youth Scholarships

Henry Street offers monetary awards to graduating high school seniors and current college students involved in Settlement programs. Awards may be used for tuition, books and other school related expenses, supporting the continued success of program participants throughout college.

GED Classes

Henry Street offers GED classes, in conjunction with Literacy Partners and the Settlement's Workforce Development Center. Classes are held at the Boys and Girls Republic, 888 East Sixth Street and 99 Essex Street. Interested students should call Literacy Partners at 212.725.9200.

Tutoring

Tutoring and homework help are available to high school or college students at the Boys & Girls Republic, 888 East Sixth Street, at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday.
