WHAT IS LEADERSHIP INSTITUTE?
Leadership Institute is a year-long, after-school program for high school-aged young women. Classes meet from October to May, centering community building and intensive leadership development through intellectual and personal growth. Our classes provide a safe, enriching, and creative experience where participants can challenge their own learning as well as explore and honor their own boundaries and self-care. We also support young women in their college processes and provide greatly needed networking opportunities. Participants receive a stipend at the end of the year based on their attendance. Our leadership institute classes are as follows:
Option A) Sisterhood Academy – This class will focus on sisterhood, leadership, and redefining what these words mean and look like! You will participate in workshops around identity, healthy relationships and wellness, media, youth activism, social justice, and topics you suggest! Using your own life experiences as a starting point to learn, you will explore and discuss different issues that matter to you, while building a community of support. You will participate in field trips and conferences while strengthening your confidence, communication, and activism skills. Come join the sisterhood!
Option B) Newark Leadership Scholars – This class will focus on educational justice, college readiness and college prep! The educational justice aspect of the class will examine: What makes a good school, and why aren’t all schools good? What is a “good education” and how can you fight for your right to one? You will also receive support and guidance around your own college plans. You will learn what colleges are looking for, how to apply, options to consider, and begin your journey! Open to juniors only.
Option C) Newark CompUGirls – This class will expose young women to the latest technologies in digital media, game development, and virtual worlds to address social issues around you. This is your chance to try something new and use media to share your message with the world!
