Our names are Caitlin Dortch and Madhuri Swarna, and we are the co-chairs for the High School Law Institute at NYU Law. We are reaching out to you to about an opportunity for high school students interested in the law to participate in a free Saturday program at NYU School of Law. Below is a detailed description of the program’s curriculum, dates, and application procedure. Additional information can also be found on our website, http://www.law.nyu.ed u/studentorganizations/highsch oollawinstitute. The program is currently accepting applications for the 2017-2018 academic year and we want to reach as many students as possible. Therefore, if you know any students that may be interested in our program, please feel free to share the application link with the students.
About the Curriculum:
Students from high schools all over New York City and New Jersey meet for three hours on Saturday mornings to take classes on topics such as criminal law, constitutional law, mock trial, moot court, and international law and trade. The classes will be taught by current law school students based on curricula aimed at discussing both substantive legal doctrines and how those doctrines interact with our society. In addition to classroom experiences, students will attend a college day hosted by our sister program at Columbia Law School in the fall where students will recieve college application advice, feedback on personal statements, and have an opportunity to speak to admissions officers/alumni from various colleges and universities. At the end of the program, students will apply the skills learned in their mock trial or moot court classes in a mock trial or moot court competition against Columbia’s HSLI students. Finally, students have the opportunity to apply for a mentor who will be a current member of the law school. Mentors will meet with students at least once a month to provide support the student throughout the year and, ideally, beyond the program.
Program Dates:
The program runs for eight weeks in the fall (September 30-November 18, 2017) and six weeks in the Spring (January 27-March 3, 2018. College day will be on November 18, 2017 and the competition and graduation will be on March 3, 2018.
