Research Assistant, Full Time/Temporary
The City Museum is seekinga full-time Research Assistant for a major installation about the future of New York City scheduled to open in 2016. The job will entail supporting curatorial staff by conducting online and archival research as well as soliciting information from relevant experts and presenting that information to the curatorial and design team. Curatorial Associate, Full Time/Temporary
The Museum seeks an experienced Curatorial Associate for a one-year, full-time position. The Curatorial Associate helps to organize and implement temporary exhibitions and associated projects, including publications and websites. He or she also works to support the Museum's curators and guest curators by providing project management and assistance. Tasks include organizing object lists; managing budgets; securing rights and reproductions; exhibition text review, editing, and production; managing relationships with consultants such as exhibition and graphic designers; and coordinating activities with other museum departments, including scheduling interdepartmental meetings with exhibition team members. Additionally the Curatorial Assistant helps with day-to-day functions of the curatorial department, supporting the Chief Curator and curatorial staff by performing general office duties.
Qualifications: Masters degree in Museum Studies or a related field; extensive hands-on experience in managing complex projects, ideally in a museum setting, and excellent computer skills, especially fluency with Excel. The ideal candidate is collegial, self-motivated, and highly detail-oriented, with an ability to work independently as well as in a collaborative environment. Excellent research and writing skills are necessary, and the ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously is imperative.
Per Diem Educator: Museum-based programs
The Frederick A.O. Schwarz Children’s Center serves over 43,000 children and adults each school year through fieldtrips, afterschool programs, family programs and professional development. We are currently seeking per diem educators to provide interactive experiences for school children. These programs are delivered to a wide ranging audience, from kindergarten to high school. There is some flexibility as to which days of the week candidates are available, but priority will be given to those who can work mornings from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm and can be available more than two days a week. Read the full job description here.
Per Diem Educator: School-based programs
The Frederick A.O. Schwarz Children’s Center serves over 43,000 children and adults each school year. In 2014-15, we’re piloting a school-based archaeology program for Brooklyn schools. We are currently seeking a per diem educator to provide interactive experiences using real archaeological objects from 19th century Brooklyn. Programming will take place in elementary and middle schools throughout Brooklyn. Programs will be offered to schools Monday through Friday during the school day. INTERNS

The Museum offers a variety of fall, spring, and summer internships for college and graduate students. Acceptance into the internship program is based on academic achievement, interests, experience, and availability. Applications are rolling, but follow a semester timeline. Time commitments are flexible and dependent on the Museum’s needs. All internships are unpaid.

INTERNSHIPS ARE AVAILABLE IN THE FOLLOWING DEPARTMENTS:

Collections
Collections seeks interns for different types of work, including archives, collections management, exhibitions, and registration. Candidates should be enrolled in a Master's Program in Museum Studies, Library Science, Art History, or other relevant field, and have strong organizational skills. Candidates must be detail-oriented; experience handling objects is a plus. Candidates should indicate one or more departmental preferences: Costumes & Textiles; Furniture & Decorative Art; Photographs, Prints & Drawings; Paintings & Sculpture; Theater; Manuscripts & Ephemera; Collections Management; or Registration. Development
Development seeks an intern who is currently attending college or graduate school and has an interest in fund raising. The intern will assist with researching prospective foundation, corporate, and individual donors; coordinating special events; filing, data entry, and other administrative tasks. Candidates should have good presentation, research, and computer skills. Time commitment is flexible, with some evenings required; a minimum of two days per week is preferred.
Public Programs
Public Programs seeks an intern who is currently enrolled in college or graduate school to assist with all aspects of Museum programming. A passion for New York City history, cultural life, urban planning, architecture and design, and event planning is required. Please review current and past public programs on our website. Candidates must adhere to deadlines and demonstrate strong writing, interpersonal and social media skills. Duties include conducting research, ticket processing and customer service, networking and outreach, assisting with set-up, check-in, and audio-visual equipment. Hours during the week are flexible, but evening and weekend availability is necessary.
Frederick A.O. Schwarz Children's Center
Frederick A.O. Schwarz Children's Center at the Museum offers programs that help children learn about New York City and their place in it. The Center provides a rich mix of lessons and hands-on activities, semester-long programs that explore East Harlem's evolving neighborhood, and a citywide history competition that encourages independent student research. Interns are needed to work on different projects throughout the year to support Saturday Academy, NYC History Day, Professional Development, and general administrative needs.

Graphic Design
Graphic Design seeks an intern who is currently attending college or graduate school for Graphic Design. The candidate will assist the Senior Graphic Designer with layout and production of internal and external projects, both online and print, and will assist in updating the Museum's website. Knowledge of Adobe's Creative Suite is required and a familiarity with web technologies is a plus. Candidates should have good communication, organization, and computer skills. Time commitment is flexible, but a minimum of ten hours per week is preferred.
Information Technology
The Museum’s IT Department is currently looking for student interns to learn and assist with integrating technology into a business infrastructure. Applicants must be flexible in availability, with a minimum commitment of 12 to 16 hours per week.

Communications & Marketing
The Museum seeks interns currently attending college or graduate school to assist with all aspects of promoting the Museum, including audience development, media research, campaign design, social media marketing, digital advertising, event planning, media tracking, and data reporting and analysis. The ideal candidate is creative, energetic, detail-oriented, passionate about the arts, and eager to gain real world experience working in public relations at a New York City cultural institution. Responsibilities will include administrative tasks and the opportunity to complete one to three special projects designed to enhance a professional portfolio. Applicants must be willing to commit to 15 hours per week for a minimum of three months. A flexible work schedule is available.

VOLUNTEERS

Volunteering for the City Museum provides an opportunity to contribute valuable services to a non-profit institution, while promoting the Museum’s mission to educate the public about New York City, its heritage and continual transformation.
Qualified candidates should possess a passion for what the city has to offer and an appreciation of its distinctive character and diversity. A flexible attitude, reliability, computer, and internet skills are critical. Volunteering at the City Museum requires a one-year commitment and a minimum availability of six hours each month or 60 hours annually.

Information Desk
Handles visitor inquiries. Minimum one 2-hour shift per week.
Docent
Provides free gallery tours for the public. Requires a commitment to developing proficiency about the Museum’s collection and new exhibitions. Commitment to ongoing training and personal and professional interaction with the public is required.
