Mystery and Benevolence: Masonic and Odd Fellows Folk Art from the Kendra and Allan Daniel Collection

Enigmatic, evocative, and often simply strange, fraternal references are a rich part of contemporary American popular culture. But the seductive mystique of secret societies, with their cryptic signs, gestures, and arcane rituals, has been inculcated in our American experience since the early eighteenth century. Before the age of mass production, the artist who painted a portrait or embellished a piece of furniture might have also decorated a parade banner, an apron, symbols on a chart, or a backdrop for a fraternal lodge. More important, he or she encoded the ideals of fellowship, labor, charity, passage, and wisdom—the core of fraternal teachings—into the many forms associated with fraternal practice. The iconic art and objects showcased in Mystery and Benevolence relate the tenets of fraternal belief through a potent combination of highly charged imagery, form, and meaning. The exhibition explores the fascinating visual landscape of fraternal culture through almost two hundred works of art comprising a major gift to the American Folk Art Museum from Kendra and Allan Daniel.

MARCH 2016 Thurgood Marshall Summer Law Internship Program (Thurgood) DUE: Friday, March 18th.

Thurgood Marshall Summer Law Internship Program (Thurgood)

Thurgood is an intensive program which places high-achieving inner-city high school students with legal employers for the summer, and provides them with additional programming before, during, and after the summer designed to help them prepare for a legal career.

I wanted to encourage you to share.

Entry into the program is based upon a rigorous interview process and those selected must have demonstrated academic excellence and an interest in learning about careers in the law.

Students are first nominated by their schools and then interviewed at the New York City Bar; this process consists of face-to-face meetings with the students and a written test that is administered to determine comfort with challenges common in an office environment. Job assignments in firms vary depending on the needs of the employer, but all students accepted into the program will be exposed to many different practice areas and types of law. More information can be found on our website.

The program provides internships to NYC public high school students from underrepresented groups in the legal profession who:

  • Are high school juniors or seniors (must be 16 years old)
  • Are enrolled in the Law & Justice Program at their school or have a demonstrated interest in the law
  • Have above average grades

The student application can be found here, and the deadline for submitting applications is Friday, March 18th.

Please feel free to reach out to Ari Joseph, Esq. ( copied) with any questions related to the law and pipeline diversity program. He can also be reached  via phone at  212-859-4511. Thank you.

Always,
Jolan
