On Nature Exploration Hikes we will discover the plants and animals that inhabit the urban forest.  Hiking  programs feature intensity levels ranging from light (a leisurely stroll on mostly paved paths), moderate (longer, faster paced hikes on rugged terrain), to vigorous (long distance, with hills and rugged terrain).  For all hiking programs we recommend wearing comfortable shoes or boots, and packing water and a light snack.

Join Mike Feller for an early morning nature walk through Inwood Hill Park. Inwood is home to Manhattan's last forest and only remaining salt marsh. It's an ideal spot to see many species of animals, insects and birds, including the occassional bald eagle.

Birding programs are appropriate for all skill levels and beginners are welcome.

The ancient sport of archery is an activity just about anyone can participate in.  Archery helps to improve your concentration and develop your mental discipline.  Like any new skill, archery requires practice and patience to master.  Urban Park Ranger-led archery programs sharpen these skills while connecting you with nature by getting you outdoors.  Archery is also a great way to build upper body strength and to stay fit!  Our trained Rangers will demonstrate the safe and proper way to draw a bow, shoot an arrow, and focus on the target.  Discover Archery for yourself and learn to hit your mark!

Families and children, ages 8 years and older, are welcome to participate in our archery programs.  Programs are first-come, first-served.   Participation in a mandatory safety review led by a trained Ranger is required.  All equipment is provided and personal archery equipment is not allowed.

On Nature Exploration Hikes we will discover the plants and animals that inhabit the urban forest. Our Night Hikes allow participants to see parks in a different light, and are great for families. Fitness Hikes feature less talking and more walking, for those who don’t mind a vigorous two hour hike. Learn how to navigate using a map and compass on our Orienteering programs. Special geo-cache programs teach you how to use a GPS while searching for hidden prizes.  

Hiking and Orienteering programs feature intensity levels ranging from light (a leisurely stroll on mostly paved paths), to moderate (longer, faster paced hikes on rugged terrain), to vigorous (long distance, with hills and rugged terrain). This is a light intensity level event. For all hiking programs we recommend wearing comfortable shoes or boots, and packing water and a light snack.

This event repeats every week on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday between 3/16/2013 and 4/5/2013.

The Community Environmental Center EcoHouse, a mobile, free, environmental education exhibit, will be at storm-damaged Inwood Hill Park through April 5. Fun as well as educational, the EcoHouse is an ideal experience for both youngsters and their parents. Wall signs explain all the displays, but to really get the full EcoHouse effect, listen to CEC’s expert guides, or bring your cell or smart phone and listen to the audio guide.

Hours are Mondays through Fridays, 10:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. for school groups; and 3:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. and Saturday, 11:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m., for the general public (But walk-ins are welcome at any time!). MISSION: Girls Who Code works to educate, inspire, and equip young women with the skills and resources to pursue academic and career opportunities in computing fields.

VISION: Girls Who Code’s vision is to reach gender parity in computing fields. We believe this is paramount to ensure the economic prosperity of women, families, and communities across the globe, and to equip citizens with the 21st century tools for innovation and social change. We believe that more girls exposed to computer science at a young age will lead to more women working in the technology and engineering fields.

PATH TO SUCCESS: The U.S. Department of Labor projects that by 2020, there will be 1.4 million computer specialist job openings. To reach gender parity by 2020, women must fill half of these positions, or 700,000 computing jobs. Anecdotal data tells us that an average of 30% of those students with exposure to computer science will continue in the field. This means that 4.6M adolescent girls will require some form of exposure to computer science education to realize gender parity in 2020. Girls Who Code has set out to reach 25% of those young women needed to realize gender parity.

Girls Who Code aims to provide computer science education and exposure to 1 million young women by 2020.

Together with leading educators, engineers, and entrepreneurs, Girls Who Code has developed a new model for computer science education, pairing intensive instruction in robotics, web design, and mobile development with high-touch mentorship and exposure led by the industry’s top female engineers and entrepreneurs. In its inaugural program, Girls Who Code empowered young women from New York City’s five boroughs and will launch programs in New York, Detroit, San Francisco, and San Jose in 2013.
