We require a minimum commitment of 12 hours a week. This internship is unpaid, but we offer metro card reimbursement for four or more consecutive hours of work per day. MFTA internships may be eligible for college credit.


Materials for the Arts (MFTA), a program of the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, is New York City’s premiere municipal reuse center. MFTA, with support from the Departments of Sanitation and Education, provides a way for companies and individuals to donate unneeded supplies to its members in NYC: public schools, nonprofits with arts programming, and other government agencies.  Friends of Materials for the Arts is our nonprofit partner that guides and supports educational and cultural programming, warehouse operations, and other initiatives.
Internship candidates should:
  • Possess strong writing and interpersonal skills
  • Be highly motivated and creative, team players
  • Be able to multi-task
  • Have a keen interest in public sector, non-profits and arts organizations
  • Have familiarity with Microsoft Office, internet research, databases and or data entry is a plus.
Internship details: We require a minimum commitment of 12 hours a week, sometime between 9 am – 5 pm, Monday through Friday.  This internship is unpaid, but we offer metro card reimbursement for four or more consecutive hours of work per day. MFTA internships may be eligible for college credit.

Available Positions and Start Dates:
Office Management Department
Office Management Intern (May – August 2014) - The Office Management Department is responsible for maintaining office machines and supplies; processing recipient applications; activating new recipient accounts; and ensuring that phone and email inquiries are handled in a professional and timely manner.  We are seeking an Office Intern that will assist the Office Administrator with new recipient applications, incoming phone calls, responding to email inquiries, and maintaining office and kitchen space.  The Office Management Intern must have a keen attention to detail, be personable, and have a working knowledge of Microsoft Office.

Operations Department
Volunteer Intern (May – August 2014) - The Volunteer Coordinator is responsible for recruiting and overseeing volunteer groups at Materials for the Arts. The Volunteer Intern will assist, in a hands-on setting, with individual volunteers and special needs groups.  The Volunteer Intern will help assess work load, organize projects, and manage volunteers for a variety of projects, including events.  S/he will help build and maintain relationships with a diverse population of volunteers from various backgrounds.  The ideal candidate will be patient, compassionate, and also have a desire to help adults with disabilities.

Donations Intern (May – August 2014) - Each year, more than 1,000 companies and individuals support Materials for the Arts by donating their unneeded supplies. The Donations Team is responsible for securing material donations, scheduling pick-ups and drop-offs, managing our online Direct Donations service, processing tax letters, and creating an online presence. The Donations Interrn will assist with material donations outreach, updating donor accounts, responding to donor inquiries, and managing donor and invoice files. This internship is ideal for someone who is detail-oriented and organized, and has experience in database management, research, and communication.

Communications Department
Communications & Event Marketing Intern (May – August 2014) - The Communications Department produces digital and print content and manages all internal and external communication for Materials for the Arts. This includes all social media content, website updates, blog articles, press coverage, and more. The Communications Intern will work with the Communications Coordinator to compile press lists, pitch stories to local and national media, and also research creative reuse ideas for the blog. Applicants with social media, research, marketing, and/or public relations experience are preferred. For those with events marketing interest and background, there may also be opportunities to represent Materials for the Arts at art booths throughout NYC during the summer; this will require a more flexible schedule beyond the typical 9-5 hours.

Development Department
Development Intern (May – August 2014) - The Development Department at Friends of Materials for the Arts is looking for an organized and sharp intern with an interest in fundraising. S/he will assist in researching new donor prospects, preparing donor profiles, and updating the fundraising database. The intern will also participate in the planning of cultivation and public events. This opportunity is ideal for someone looking to learn about nonprofit development by working with a small fundraising team in a fast-paced environment. Familiarity with eTapestry or Blackbaud is a plus.

Education Department
Education Intern (May – August 2014) - The Education Center offers programming focused on creative reuse by making art with readily available materials and the ever-changing MFTA warehouse inventory. The department hosts programs, organizes gallery exhibitions, and sends teaching artists into the community. The Education Intern will assist Teaching Artists during workshops, help develop curriculum, and also assist with gallery and public events. The Education Intern will also perform administrative duties such as bookings, planning workshop and event logistics, and communicating with MFTA recipients.
