FALL 2015 AMERICAN FOLK ART MUSUEM TEEN DOCENT PROGRAM APPLY! SEE MS. MACNEIL

http://folkartmuseum.org/resources/teen-docent-blog/

een Docent Program

The Teen Docent Program brings New York City high school students together with artists, curators, and educators to discuss art critically and to think creatively. Participating students explore folk and self-taught art through interdisciplinary connections.
High school juniors and seniors are eligible to become teen docents at the museum. Participating students learn about the museum’s collection, special exhibitions, and careers in the arts. They hone their public speaking skills, engage in a variety of gallery activities, go on excursions, and participate in exchanges with other museum teen councils. Throughout the program, students develop their own gallery tours based on collection research. Program graduates are eligible to become Summer Teen Leaders, and have paid work experience at the museum during summer months.
The Teen Docent Program runs September through June and meets Tuesdays from 4–5:30 pm.
For students to participate, the school must commit by assigning a coordinator to oversee the partnership and act as a liaison with the museum. As partners, schools will receive free tours led by Teen Docents for their high school students.
Stay connected with the adventures, activities, and insights of our Teen Docent cohort by checking out the class blog.

Every Wishbone student has an adult Advocate. In addition to submitting the written recommendation, the Advocate helps the student fundraise their program fees using Wishbone’s crowd-sourced fundraising platform and Fundraiser Toolkit.

We enable program affordability through a combination of fundraising channels

Through exclusive tuition discounts from program partners, crowd-sourced campaign funding, and negotiated corporate and foundation sponsorships, we’re able to help a growing number of students afford program opportunities to pursue their passions.

We share success stories to inspire others

Our students share updates about their experience with donors online and by email. After finishing their program, they return to classrooms more engaged — inspiring peers with a heightened sense of personal motivation and involvement in their education.

FALL 2015... Youth Sailing Program Launching From Inwood's La Marina...The Inwood branch will be open every weekend from Aug. 22 through late October. There are three trips a day beginning at 10 a.m., with the last sail leaving at about 4:30 p.m.

Youth Sailing Program Launching From Inwood's La Marina This Weekend

Chelsea's Hudson River Community Sailing will set up a second branch in Inwood.
Youth Sailing Program Coming to La Marina
INWOOD — A Chelsea-based boating organization that works with underserved youth is setting sail for Inwood.
Hudson River Community Sailing, which operates from Pier 66 in Chelsea, will open a second branch at La Marina in Inwood Hill Park beginning Saturday, the group said.
HRCS is a nonprofit organization that partners with public high schools to help students who need support in math and science. Students improve their STEM skills through a hands-on after-school program that includes learning to sail and boat building.
The organization also provides fee-based sailing lessons to the wider community to support its youth program.
When HRCS’s Inwood branch opens, it will offer paid sailing lessons as well as some free community sailing days, said executive director Robert Burke.

"It’s just to kind of give the community a taste," Burke said. "We want to get to meet people in the community and get them to meet us."
Over the winter, the organization will work to target local public schools and youth organizations to expand its program to Uptown students by 2016, Burke said.
Because HRCS will have docks at La Marina, but no boathouse, the program may look different than the one in Chelsea, but it will still give students a chance to build their skills, he said.
"It would bring a mix of kids from the community and schools, get them out on the water and give them a chance to increase their skills, whether on the water, through boat building or boat maintenance," Burke said. "Our goal is always building them toward independence so that they could sail on their own."
He said the group has already started speaking with some local schools and that it has reached out to foundations to try to secure funding.
Burke, who has previously done work with Outward Bound and the Children's Aid Society at I.S. 218 in Inwood, said he is excited to bring the program Uptown.
"I’ve had my eye on Inwood for a while," he said. "There’s nobody up there doing this stuff, so if groups like ours don’t get in there, kids are not going to have the chance to get out on the water."
The Inwood branch will be open every weekend from Aug. 22 through late October. There are three trips a day beginning at 10 a.m., with the last sail leaving at about 4:30 p.m.

FALL 2015 FREE Arts events at The United Palace!

UPCA recognizes the critical role the arts play in providing life-changing experiences and opening doors for both young and old. Washington Heights has traditionally been underserved in terms of access to art programs, in part due to a lack of dedicated space. UPCA creates new educational programs and hosts organizations that already have a track record of providing excellent arts instruction.

UPCA launched its Community Art Programs by recruiting two El Sistema-inspired youth orchestras, the Harmony Program and WHIN Music Project. Every year we host a master class with the New York Philharmonic for the The Harmony Program. Students in WHIN have been challenged to stretch the bounds of classical music by performing "Ode to Joy" with students in our West African drumming program and performing live to a video created by a local filmmaker. Both orchestras participate annually in "The Concert!" which features over 100 music students from six New York metro-are El Sistema-inspired music programs performing together in a mass orchestra. Another hallmark of our community art programs are the annual "Young People Perform!" nights that showcase students across art disciplines.

Most of UPCA children's art classes are FREE.
Organizations that UPCA has recruited to offer arts and cultural programs at the United Palace include: Harmony Program, WHIN Music Project, People's Theatre Project, Harambee Dance Company, Statement Arts, Creative Art Works, and Dance Project of Washington Heights.

SUMMER AND FALL 2015... Collecting data on street trees leads to a greener and greater NYC!

Collecting data on street trees leads to a greener and greater NYC!

Our street trees make our city cooler, our air cleaner, and our neighborhoods more beautiful.

TreesCount! 2015 is New York City’s third effort to inventory our urban forest, and we need tree-loving citizens like you to help us collect data. Volunteers will be trained on how to identify and assess street trees, using simple site surveying tools and software to map them block by block.
Along the way, to show our appreciation, volunteers will receive rewards when they hit certain milestones! Learn more here.
