MARCH 2016 Thurgood Marshall Summer Law Internship Program (Thurgood) DUE: Friday, March 18th.

Thurgood Marshall Summer Law Internship Program (Thurgood)

Thurgood is an intensive program which places high-achieving inner-city high school students with legal employers for the summer, and provides them with additional programming before, during, and after the summer designed to help them prepare for a legal career.

I wanted to encourage you to share.

Entry into the program is based upon a rigorous interview process and those selected must have demonstrated academic excellence and an interest in learning about careers in the law.

Students are first nominated by their schools and then interviewed at the New York City Bar; this process consists of face-to-face meetings with the students and a written test that is administered to determine comfort with challenges common in an office environment. Job assignments in firms vary depending on the needs of the employer, but all students accepted into the program will be exposed to many different practice areas and types of law. More information can be found on our website.

The program provides internships to NYC public high school students from underrepresented groups in the legal profession who:

  • Are high school juniors or seniors (must be 16 years old)
  • Are enrolled in the Law & Justice Program at their school or have a demonstrated interest in the law
  • Have above average grades

The student application can be found here, and the deadline for submitting applications is Friday, March 18th.

Please feel free to reach out to Ari Joseph, Esq. ( copied) with any questions related to the law and pipeline diversity program. He can also be reached  via phone at  212-859-4511. Thank you.

Always,
Jolan

THIS JUST IN... Saturday, March 5, 2016

I hope this email finds you all well. I wanted to reach out and share something really cool our office is helping pull together next week, Saturday March 5th. As you might know, one of Gale’s hallmark pieces of legislation when she was in the City Council was the Open Data law, which requires city agencies to start putting their data on the NYC Open Data portal. Over the past 4 years we have been working with agencies to ensure compliance. On March 5th  we are commemorating the 4th anniversary of the passage of the Open Data law and are co-hosting a day long hackathon where participants will work with the data to take a deeper look into their own neighborhoods.

As part of this day long deep dive into City data, we are running a Student Only track, which will give students a chance to dig into city data for themselves and learn to make maps, analyze trends, and think through how to use this data for social change in their own communities. We only have 15 slots for this student track (which will run 9am-4pm).

This is a fantastic opportunity to meet some of the coolest people in tech and to get a start on some cutting edge programs. Would you all be interested in having students participate?

*Students will need to bring laptops

As always, if you have any questions, please let me know.

All my best,
Ayisha
