All Minds Matter: Resolving the Achievement Gap of Young Men of Color in The Age of Obama
Monday, March 2, 2015
9:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.
The New School, Theresa Lang Community and Student Center
55 West 13th Street, Room 202
New York, NY 10011
In her widely acclaimed book, Michelle Alexander, author of The New Jim Crow, put forth a proposition that the United States has maintained a system of oppression within the criminal justice system that has disproportionately affected African Americans. One could argue that similarly the American education system punishes boys of color more than it educates them. While the election of a Black president in the United States is often celebrated, the reality of declining academic achievement and graduation rates of boys of color as well as their high suspension rates must be confronted. An interdisciplinary panel of distinguished experts will discuss the causes, implications and remedies of this issue.
Panelists include:
David Banks, Eagle Academy Foundation
Ellis Cose, Newsweek
John Duval, NYC Department of Education
Tracy Garcia Mitchell, NYC Department of Youth and Community Development
Edmund Gordon, Columbia University
Melanie Hartzog, Children’s Defense Fund
Pedro Noguera, New York University
Howard Steele, The New School
Warren Spielberg, The New School
Kirkland Vaughans, Adelphi University and Hempstead School District
Presented by Eugene Lang College The New School for Liberal Arts, The New School Social Justice Committee, The New School Gender Studies Program, The New School Global Studies Program, New York University Postdoctoral Program in Psychotherapy & Psychoanalysis Committee on Ethnicity, Race, Culture, Class & Language (CERCCL), and CUNY Queens College Center for Ethnic, Racial and Religious Understanding.
